Nudging towards sustainable mobility behaviour in nature destinations: Parkkihaukka mobile information service.
Nature destinations are often away from the immediate proximity of urban, crowded areas. Paradoxically though, many natural destinations suffer from excess private car traffic, lack of parking space and disturbing mobility behaviour. In many cases, tolls and restrictions are used as a solution to these problems. We instead piloted a “softer” approach in Nuuksio National Park in Finland. We realised Parkkihaukka (“Park Hawk”) web application usable both with desktop and mobile browser in order to nudge peoples’ mobility behaviour towards desired direction with real-time information from the most popular parts of the natural park. This map-based application shows the occupancy of the selected parking lots, real-time timetables for bus stops as well as national park facilities. Initial feedback and use statistics give us cause to believe that a well-realised information service can alter peoples’ mobility behaviour in a positive way.
