This paper explores a concept of Industrial Internet to collect and utilise data from vehicle-installed sensors for the purpose of enhanced winter road management. Data from vehicle-installed sensors extends the coverage of road condition information from fixed Road Weather Information System (RWIS) network. Vehicle-based sensors observe similar data as fixed RWIS: road surface condition and temperature, friction values, air humidity and temperature. Some vehicles have also cameras installed to produce continuous images on the road.

We analyse the characteristics of early adopters of two intelligent vehicle safety systems, emergency braking and speed alert. Car users’ experiences with the two systems and the characteristics of early adopters of the systems were studied with an online survey organised in five European countries: Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain. All of the studied variables related to the user – gender, age, kilometres driven annually and monthly household income – had a statistically significant relationship with using emergency braking.

A significant portion of global population has disabilities limiting their independent mobility. Assistive technologies and accessible physical environment can reduce the challenges. Concepts such as Internet of Things (IoT) and smart environments, however, are still scarcely utilized in practice although they can provide a new level of assistance by interconnecting people and their personal devices with their environment. In this paper, we analyse opportunities and prerequisites of IoT solutions for improving accessibility in a public transport context.

Nature destinations are often away from the immediate proximity of urban, crowded areas. Paradoxically though, many natural destinations suffer from excess private car traffic, lack of parking space and disturbing mobility behaviour. In many cases, tolls and restrictions are used as a solution to these problems. We instead piloted a “softer” approach in Nuuksio National Park in Finland.

Information on the technical functioning, impacts, interoperability and acceptance of ITS systems is crucial to making decisions on the deployment of these systems. The resources, time and amount of data available for evaluation studies of a potential ITS system are often more or less limited. A need for more agile evaluation methods has been identified.
